Why Some Succeed & Others Don't: A Tale of Two Guys

By: Bal Simon

Once upon a time, there were two guys, Gus and Sam. While they didn't know each other, Gus and Sam had something in common. They both wanted to be in their own online businesses.

That was a year ago. Today, Gus has a business that doesn't come close to paying his bills. He feels stressed out nearly all the time, and he feels caught between the failing in his business and the displeasure of being back on a job.

Sam, on the other hand, has a thriving business. He makes at least replacement income from his good paying job of a year ago, he is nearly debt-free, and is living a very good life with his wife, family and hamster farm.

Both were similarly situated. Both had about the same amount of "seed money" to start. Neither had contacts to speak of in the new enterprises that they were beginning.

What was different? The way they pursued their dream. Let's take a look inside at a typical day.

=================
Gus: Wakes up at 9am, relaxes in bed, watches the morning news, shouts at the TV - especially when the stock market is discussed, and when he's ready, he gets up.

Sam: Wakes up at 9am. By 9:20 he's up. By 9:40, he's showered, and by 10:15, he's had breakfast.

Note: Observe that both are rousting themselves at a much later time of day than the typical American worker who will have been on his or her job from 3 to 4 hours depending on their start times.

=================
Gus: 10am Finally gets up. By 10:20, he's showered. By 10:40, he's had breakfast,and by 10:50 he's at his desk, but hasn't really figured out what he wants to do. So he checks his email, chats with some "colleagues," and then thinks that he'd better get down to business, whatever that might be.

Sam: 10:40am - At his desk, supplies at the ready, goals list at the ready, actions list at the ready, Sam begins reviewing and tweaking his two lists. By 10:45 he's ready to start. He chooses the goal he wishes to pursue at the moment, and then starts performing the tasks associated with the goal. He does this with a sub-goal in mind: to complete as many of the tasks as he can within an hour.

Note: Sam is active, pursuing his dreams, while Gus goes through some motions that he thinks it prove he's serious, while in truth, he's not serious about his business at all.

=================
Gus: 11:30am Checks several forums, looks at more email, looks at offers from marketers who've sent him stuff to look at, maybe purchases something and looks at it briefly and then realizes "It's time for lunch."

Sam: 11:50am Begins work on developing the products he has a goal to market and sell. He whistles with satisfaction as he realizes that he's soon going to have things to offer other people. 12:30 rolls around and he realizes it's time for a quick lunch.

Note: Gus continues doing nothing all day and thinks he's "taking care of business." Sam on the other hand, is making progress, even early in the day.

=================
Gus 1pm: More of the same. Doesn't really see much to do today, and briefly wonders about that, but not too deeply. It's not his fault that he can't make headway, and at 2:30pm he calls it a day.

Sam: 1pm - Looks over his contacts and begins exploring ways to have mutually profitable relationships with at least some of them.

Note: Sam realizes that success through just his own efforts requires much greater effort and skill than is required if he leverages good, mutually beneficial relationships with others.

=================
Gus: Off hanging out with some friends for the rest of the day.

Sam: 3pm - Sends emails to some of the contacts with his quick, well written, pithy offers; opens chat with others for the same purpose. With chats, he sets a firm time limit.

Note: Again, Gus is AWOL and Sam is busy taking action.

=================
Sam: 4:30pm - Begins creating offers used to attract people to his list.

Note: Sam works on the assumptions that he has information to contribute to the world at large and that he will be rewarded for this to the extent that he produces high quality products that other people want, and markets them so that they know about these products and come to want them.

=================
Sam: 5:30pm - takes an evening break to spend time with family and friends.

Note: Sam knows that there are priorities in his life. That all the business success in the world if the higher priorities are not taken care of.

=================
Sam: 10pm - works on keywords, AdWords, and other ways of generating traffic.

Note: Sam diversifies his efforts every day, making real progress on multiple fronts.

=================
Gus: 10:30pm - Comes back from hanging out. Looks at his computer. Wonders why he's feeling so unenthusiastic. Checks his email and sighs. Complains on Twitter and Facebook. Other people commiserate with him. Some tell him to be more productive, but he thinks that it's easy for them to say. They just don't understand how stressed out he is.

Sam: 11:30pm - Finishes for the day. Looks back to review the day, to make initial plans for tomorrow, and says, "Done and job well done!"

Note: Gus has tried little and accomplished nothing. Sam has made real progress - enough to go to sleep with a smile on his face.

=================
Next Day:

Gus - Same as day before.

Sam: - Similar PROCEDURE as before, with the exception that he starts from where he left off. He thus advances, makes increasing numbers of contacts and secures increasing numbers of opportunities.

=================
Overall Results:

Gus - No change over the course of a year. Still dickering around, feeling "burned out," but in reality, feeling low self-esteem, finds bitterness increasing, and starts thinking that "it's all a scam."

Sam - Good habits are even more solidly in place. Sam is happy; his family is happy, and he's making money doing less work. The result of knowledge applied.

- The End -

So there you have it. A tale of two guys. One who stagnates and one who is on his way to success.

Which guy do you mostly see in yourself? Your *honest* answer tells you (a) why you are where you are and (b) what you can expect of your life a year from now. And if you're more like Gus than Sam, you now have a blueprint of sorts telling you how to be more "Sam-like."
